About this deal

Baker, a food historian, channels the spirit of the original domestic goddess with a collection of 220 recipes to mark the 150th anniversary of Beeton's Book fo Household Management. As part of my work in “Bringing food history alive”, it is my wish to live on in Mrs Beeton’s name: to revive and recreate recipes from my 1906 edition of Mrs Beeton’sBook of Household Management – with a Miss Windsor twist, of course!

On the continent, especially it Italy, it is much used, and the French consider it an essential in many dishes” (124). Except for a good cup of tea, the popular conception of British food is that of overcooked, bland vegetables and simple roasted meats. There is a 3 cm split at the head of the spine, and a 1 cm split at the base of the spine, with general wear along h. And as nature intended, she flourished into the worlds-greatest teacher of all things “domestic and culinary”.

So, darlings, this clearly explains why my very first Yorkshire pud emerged from the oven looking rather like a bobbly soggy quiche – Yikes! Flicking through my trusty collection of Mrs Beeton’s recipes (from her 1861 Book of Household Management), I came across one entitled “Fruit Turnovers (Suitable for Picnics)”. While the title of the episode is referring to a different book, the close-up shot of the binding and the width make it clear to the viewer that Jon Hamm's character is holding the 2,000-page full text, with "Modern Edition" added below the title on the spine. On 1 October 1861, the instalments were collected into one volume with the title The Book of Household Management, comprising information for the Mistress, Housekeeper, Cook, Kitchen-Maid, Butler, Footman, Coachman, Valet, Upper and Under House-Maids, Lady's-Maid, Maid-of-all-Work, Laundry-Maid, Nurse and Nurse-Maid, Monthly Wet and Sick Nurses, etc. The Book of Household Management; Comprising information for the Mistress, Housekeeper, Cook, Kitchen Maid, Butler etc.

The batter needs to be room temperature as it will help your pudding to rise immediately in the oven. You see, as far as I know, hasty pudding or more commonly known as tapioca pudding has been a staple of our beloved sweet course since the 1800’s – well, a lot less so in today’s modern world, but suffice to say it’s certainly making a glorious comeback! It was light and refreshing and would be lovely on a warm sunny day with a barbecue, or even in a sandwich. What moved me, in the first instance, to attempt a work like this, was the discomfort and suffering which I had seen brought about by household mismanagement” – Miss Windsor, couldn’t agree more!

Moving swiftly on, whilst scouring through my glorious 1906 edition, there I discovered Mrs Beeton’s ONE and ONLY recipe to be of her very own creation – Benevolent Soup, which was originally known as Useful Soup for Benevolent Purposes.Text is available under the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike License; additional terms may apply. Despite professing to be a guide of reliable information about every aspect of running a house for the aspirant middle classes, the original edition devotes 23 pages to household management, then discusses cooking for almost all of the other 900.

Nowadays, as you know, Yorkshire pudding is baked in the oven and is served as an accompaniment to roast beef and gravy. It was initially serialised in 24 monthly instalments, in her husband Samuel Orchart Beeton's publication The Englishwoman's Domestic Magazine; the first instalment appeared in 1859. I doubt she had time to participate in any extra culinary activities, as she was a wife, mother, mistress of the house, and a career woman! We’re starting with a simple vegetable soup made of cabbage, leeks, lettuce, cauliflower, carrots, and peas. There are several recipes for Luncheon Cakes online, all of them suggesting that this is a light fruit cake that would be served during the day.
